    {soviet_184_1_450.jpg}
Was a major battle of World War IIgiant dick in which Nazi Germany and its allies fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad in southwestern Russia.
The battle took place between July 17, 1942- February 2, 1943.
Said to be the turning point of the war and was the bloodiest battle in the history of warfare with combined casualties estimated at nearly 2 million.
The Red Army stopped the Germans from taking over the city.
Main battle took place early September 1942.
Russians used 6 armies to surround the city.
    Importance of Stalingrad
The capture of Stalingrad was important to Hitler for two primary reasons
It was a major industrial city on the Volga River which is a vital transport route between the Caspian Sea and northern Russia.
As a result to the first reason, it will allow Germany to capture the city that would effectively serve as the transportation of resources and goods to the north.
Second, its capture would secure the left flank of the German armies as they advanced into the oil-rich region, which Germany wanted to cut off fuel to Stalin's war machine.
    Napolean compared to Joseph Stalin
    {animal_farm.jpg}
Is the leader of Animal Farm after the rebellion.
Based on Joseph Stalin, he uses his military/secret police (of nine attack dogs) to enfore his power.
He uses force to drive out his opponent Snowball, and to put fear in the other animals.
When Napoleon steals Snowball’s idea for a windmill, the windmill can be considered a symbol of the Soviet Five-Year Plans, a concept developed by Trotsky and adopted by Stalin, who, after banning Trotsky from the Soviet Union, claimed them to be his idea.
He takes the role of a dictator over the farm and changes the original intent of the animal society.
Squealer who is the pig that spreads Russian media, which spreads Stalin's truth to the masses. (He spreads Napoleans decisions to the other farm animals).
    The Windmill
    Is a symbol for Stalin's Five-Year plan.
The windmill was promised to make the animal's life easier.
The windmill also symbolizes Russia becomming more industralized.
The Five-Year Plan was supposed to improve the Soviet industry by increasing production and allowing the soviets to shorten the work week.
And just like the windmill, Stalin's plan was an utter failure.
After the destruction of the Windmill, the Animals decided to build another one.
Stalin kept on making new Five year plans to promise that each plan would solve all of Russia's problems and bring the USSR closer to the industralized nations of the west.
Napoleon did the same thing by promising that the windmill plan is going to be successful.
    The Destruction of the Windmill
Is symbolic to Stalin's five year plan which was a failure.
Napoleon works with Mr. Frederick, who eventually betrays Animal Farm and destroys the windmill. Though Animal Farm repels the human attack, many animals are wounded and killed. This is similar to Stalin’s Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact(which was a non aggression act) with Nazi Germany in 1939, which was later betrayed in 1941 when Hitler invaded the Soviet Union, but the Soviet Union won the war.
    Chapter 8
The animals work even harder to rebuild the windmill that was destroyed.
The next day the attack came, Frederick and his followers with about 15 men and half a dozen guns and opened fire as soon as they got within 50 yards.
A number of the animals were wounded.
Frederick and his men went to the windmill and Napoleon said it's impossible and built the walls to thick for that.
They packed blasting powder in the windmill and soon it blew up and was destroyed.
A cow, three sheep, and two geese were killed but almost everyone was wounded some how.
The animals finally chased Federick and the men out, and the Battle was called The battle of Windmill.
The animals gathered together and Squeler told them that Napolean was dying, but the next day was recovering.
The battle of Stalingrad symbolizes the battle of the windmill
At the battle of Stalingrad, Stalin used his Red Army to stop the Germans from taking over the city of Stalingrad and taking over their industrialized city as well.
At the battle of windmill, Napoleon acts just like Stalin and fights back with his Red Army(the animals) to push back Federick(Hitler) and his men(German army) in {http://contentcache-a.akamaihd.net/items/it/img/arrow-10x10.png} to stop them from taking over the farm and the windmill.
    Changed Commandments
A few days later Muriel was reading the seven commandments to herself and noticed that the fifth commandment read "No animal shall drink alcohol"(75), but was changed "No animal shall drink alcohol to excess"(75).
A few days after the battle the animals realize the commandment reading "No animal shall kill any other animal" (63) now reads "No animal shall kill any other animal without cause"(63).
    My Questions
Do you think Napoleon is making the right decisions for changing the 7 commandments, and why do you think he is doing this?
After reading when the battle occured, do you think Federick and his men are going to return for revenge?
After the battle, do you think other farms will hear about it and later attack?
How much more do you think Napoleon will be in power, or do you think someone is going to stand up?
