Similarities/Parallels
  • Mr. Jones and Nicholas II represent old government- Nicholas II was the last of the Czars; Mr. Jones was no longer leader once the animals rebelled.

  • Both were poor leaders- Under Nicholas' rule, Russia was far behind world powers in the industrial revolution & there was little faith in his leadership; Mr. Jones was a drunk who sometimes forgot to feed the animals.

  • Both had taken up drinking. "He had become much disheartened after losing money in a lawsuit, and had taken to drinking more than was good for him" (13). After Russia had lost millions in the war with Japan, it creates much frustration and Nicholas II and his men turn to drinking.

  • Both could be considered cruel- Nicholas II had his soldiers shoot and kill civilians when they attempted to rebel; Mr. Jones shot at the barn when he overhead the animals having their meeting.

  • Were not strong enough on their own. "...he and his four men were in the storeshed with whips in their hands..." (14). During the animal rebellion, Mr. Jones had men to help him take care of the beatings. Also, during "Bloody Sunday", instead of taking care of the issue himself, Nicholas II ordered his soldiers to kill all of the peasants who came to rebel.

  • Both "masters" were thrown out. "...the Rebellion had been successfully carried through..." (14). After the animals turned on Mr. Jones and his men, they gave up and Mr. Jones was chased out and expelled. Nicholas II eventually loses all control of Russia which leads him to give up his throne.
