The Battle of Cowshed (Russian Civil War)

"There was much discussion on what the battle should be called. In the end, it was named the Battle of Cowshed, since that was where the ambush had sprung" (Animal Farm, 31). The Battle of Cowshed parallels the Russian Civil War that occured after the 1917 revolution. The basis of this revolt originated from the ideas of Karl Marx (Old Major) that privitized land should be removed and it should be "communal". This is where the idea of communism (animalism) comes into place. Although Marx dies before the Russian Revolution begins, his theories survived. After which, Lenin (also Old Major) adopted the ideas of Marx. The Russian Revolution occured under the leadership of Lenin, which led to the assasination of Tsar Nicholas II and his family. He was also accompanied by Trostky and Stalin. After Lenin died, Trotsky and Stalin struggled for control. Ultimately, the civil war was led under the guidance of Trotsky (Snowball).

Even though in reality, they were not fighting against Tsar Nicholas II, who was already dead at the time of the civil war, but against anyone who was anti-Bolshevik. The Anti-Bolsheviks consisted of old army generals, landowners, middle-class citizens, and monarchists. While Trotsky's (Snowball) army was the Red Army, the opposing army was the White Army. After the battle, Trotsky (Snowball) rises as a military hero. The overall outcome of the Russian Civil war was the defeat of the White Army and the establishment of the Soviet Union, as did also, the victory of the Battle of Cowshed firmly set Animal Farm.
